To Nurture And To Gather

To Nurture And To Gather

“It isn’t hard to understand why we seek out respite, life is difficult, we crave nourishment, joy and the inspiration of beauty.”

To burrow deep into one’s living space, finding comfort and ease from the day’s events is to seek nirvana, heaven on Earth and even bliss. It isn’t hard to understand why we seek out respite, life is difficult, we crave nourishment, joy and the inspiration of beauty.

“Though we no longer live in caves, the need for shelter aside, we still long for comfort, to be nourished not only by food, but by how we live, by empathy and belonging.”

Our instinct as hunters and gatherers is deep seeded, though times have certainly changed, some things have not, our need to nourish and to a certain extent, hibernate is one that is constant in our 21st century living. We still crave to gather, collecting what inspires and satiates our minds and bodies. Though we no longer live in caves, the need for shelter aside, we still long for comfort, to be nourished not only by food, but by how we live, by empathy and belonging. This is what our living spaces do, not only for ourselves but our clan.

It is the task of contemporary architecture to align more with how we live, our instinct to gather as a people, surrounding ourselves with nature, beauty and all that inspires. This is an approach to align better with who we are, how and where we live, to inspire better living in our neighborhoods and cities, within the structure of the built environment, inside and outside. In the work of Zaha Hadid Architects this is exemplary, though Zaha Hadid has passed, she left us with what’s possible, inspiring better living, better selves and the future. This is also true of ODA Architects, their approach is to bring back nature to our cities and to speak to how we live together in our neighborhoods.

How we live today speaks volumes to how the future will look. The more we nurture ourselves and our environments both natural and built, the more fulfilled our lives and those of others to come, will be. This is our instinct of nature and nurture, of not only survival but empathy and the inspiration of beauty
